BARRICADE AGAINST
Around his mobile home
a man is building a fortress
of driftwood and stone.
Each day it grows stronger, more
resolute with its layers.
He becomes known
as the compulsive oddity
east of town.
Rumors about his purpose
percolate amongst the locals.
The most outrageous, for the sake
of art. The most likely, fear
of something unlikely.
Which means, though we won’t
admit it, we no longer
enjoy walks along
the lake’s long shore,
each beached limb
of wave-worn pine or
birch like an exclamation point
at the end of an unknown,
terrifying truth.
